Who am I?
There are many descriptions of me. Undoubtedly some people might depict me in ways that might not be flattering but they’re only seeing one facet of something far more complex. That’s what happens when you stand for something, some people might not like it – but you will. I stand for the individual. I stand for the team. I stand for the whole. I stand for a lot of things. Yet I’m always learning that flexibility is of vital importance. All that said I like to have fun as much as I can, so in my mind that’s what I do – as much as I can. Oh yes many things are very serious yet I am typically having fun, I am never bored. One only has to find the ways.
I’m usually studying sociology, psychology and most specifically ways to get people to change. Always starting with myself. I’m always changing. I’m always striving to be the better me. My other favorite subjects are language, geography, history and the maritime. I love nature and advocate for animals and the environment. I despise cruelty, pollution and injustice. I hate double standards, I love fairness and consideration. I’m a sailor and scuba diver. I’m an adventurer.
My parents split up when I was ten. My mother raised me (and remarried) but my father never left my life. She taught me unconditional love and her perpetual selfless sacrifices for me if nothing else are inspiring and humbling. Nonetheless it was my father who was the more influential. I’m very fortunate because my father told me something when I was a boy that I’ve never forgotten; “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe - it can achieve.” He was not the originator of that statement, author Napoleon Hill was. My father was into self development. Though I don’t recall really talking with him about it I can always hear his voice in my head, saying that life changing ‘secret of achievers’. That one thing, has given me not just an advantage over all those who do not know it - but a world of possibility. By the way, my mother Roseann’s voice also frequently rings in my head, it says; “Anthony, always do the right thing”.
I was a combat paratrooper when I was young and that was all about hard-charging-through no matter how I felt. One reason why I loved it was because I had a huge problem with my feelings. Around the same time I became a Punk rocker, I had a lot to rebel about. That didn’t work well in the Army and was extremely fortunate to get my honorable discharge. I’ve done a whole lot of changing, coming a long way since I was in love with death and actually suicidal. Now I love my feelings and learned that it’s really all about feelings and states. Those are the things that make or break us. There are things that make us special and there are things we must learn. No one is a greater proponent for the individual than I am, as well as being on a team. Sorry if I seem bombastic but it’s my passion that is the greatest thing about me. It‘s probably my most valuable asset.
Many people say I’m friendly and have integrity. Others say I’m weird and outspoken. They’re all jerks I wish I could tell them! Just kidding. A sense of humor is perhaps my greatest quality. And if I could give one piece of advice, it would be to increase your sense of humor. There’s no accounting for others’ but at least you’ll be laughing. Along those lines a very common malady is taking one’s self too seriously, I rarely suffer from this.
Over twenty years ago I got into Self-help. I’ve been a very goal-oriented person since. However I achieved only a few of them. That is because I first had to realize the greatest accomplishment of my life, which was to recover from drug addiction. I did that in 2000. I’ve since learned so much more about goal accomplishment and my record dramatically improved. The primary thing I learned, I mean truly learned, is that it’s not accomplishing the goals but pursuing them that is the most important thing. At any rate it’s through teamwork that the greatest things are done, that’s how I got clean and how magnificent things are built.
This endeavor to help people improve their lives is dedicated to my father Frank.
