What IS CAPTAIN COACHING?
As a small child I dreamt of sailing around the world to the South Pacific to find a treasure. Yet I never set foot on a sailboat until 2005 when I got my first one. I made a deal with the seller to also teach me how to sail. I learned everything I could about it. Then I got a bigger boat and continued learning. Now I have a reality nautical adventure show and I just turned down a contract with a major entertainment company (it wasn’t the deal I wanted)! I really am a boat captain. I am committed to self-improvement and asking for help when prudent. In 3 years I’m moving the Caribbean where I’ll live on my future sailboat. It does not end there. My adventure continues.
I changed my career in my 40s to do what I really love to do – help people. I first began to study psychology over twenty years ago when I became a businessman. How the mind operates is so fascinating! I have been a student of human behavior for a very long time. I love applying psychology and whatever else at my disposal to overcome challenges for myself and others. I began to learn early on a prime lesson; you can only help someone who wants to be helped. It took years to really learn this and now I save a lot of time.
Captain Coaching is taking charge of your life. It’s not letting circumstances and other people dictate your destiny. Just as importantly it’s not letting your own flaws rob you of what you really want. The Captain Coach helps you to become the brave captain, navigating though the obstacles and hazards to reach your objectives. A person’s life is determined by their thoughts. It’s my job to help you raise the overall quality of those thoughts. That’s what gives you a better life.
I am trained to help you with feelings. I am certified both in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and as an Integrative Life Coach. Did you know that you can change bad feelings into good ones? If you feel good you can do things that way and make better decisions. When you feel bad you tend to make bad decisions. Our states are all-important and really mean everything! Most of coaching is helping a client get past some feeling that has been stopping them or helping them get a feeling they want that they have not been able to get. This area especially is a personal victory for me because I used to be a drug addict. An addict’s worst problems are dysfunction with feelings and a sense of inadequacy. That was so long ago and it took an incredible amount of work to keep changing in the way that I envisioned for myself. It’s all so worth it. It truly is wonderful to be here right now communicating with you.
A coach fills the gap between self-help and therapy. I partner with you. Though I am not a therapist I can teach you things or apply methods that can render astonishing results. Sometimes I’m even amazed! It’s often not the outcome necessarily but the before and after. Sometimes we don’t think we’re doing so good but someone can point out we’re doing better than we were (if we really are, blowing smoke up someone’s ass is counterproductive). I’m honored to be part of it and witness it. Depending on what we’re doing I do not really guide you. I help you to stay on course and to avoid the hazards. When I was training to be a certified as a coach, I was the only NLP Practioner in the course, all my colleagues were therapists. That’s because we all do the same thing; help our clients solve abstract problems, just with different methods.
Your mission is to do something truly wonderful with your life. Are you doing it? People need a vision for themselves, that’s what makes the difference! Actually everyone has all the answers they need; the problem is they just don’t ask the right questions to get to them. Questions are even more important than the answers! Without the mindset to ask a certain question you can just forget about the answer – indeed you already have. There’s also a lot to be said of having the right questions asked at the right time. We will have dialogues not discussions.
Think about what you wanted to be when you were a kid. Then, life happened to you. Well we will get more like it was when you were young when anything is possible. We’ll uncover your purpose because that’s what makes life exciting and all your goals do-able.
Stretching yourself is the key to getting better results. I’m always doing it; if it’s in public many people often don’t recognize it so may be inclined to criticize it. They don’t get it but I do. Mark my words if you continue to do this you will be amazed as the difference. And you’ll be living a life of great strides.
I do different kinds of coaching. It’s not a long term project. My rate is $150 per hour. There are of course different packages. Greater commitments also get discounts. Change takes as long as it takes; it’s up to you what the speed is. I am friendly and integrity is of the highest importance. Coaching is done conveniently and privately over the phone. I offer several innovative services:
Personal Coaching
Virtual Coaching
The difference between coaching and therapy is often unclear; it mostly depends on what kind of coaching is being done. Indeed Melissa Tiers who certified me as an integrative life coach said “if therapy happens it’s all your fault” (to the client). Yet there is no question that she is a therapist, a very gifted one at that! She has helped many people get through all kinds of problems. And she instructed me to do likewise. Most coaches who are actually therapists as well like to avoid the term for an assortment of reasons. It matters not because it’s about results. Nonetheless I do not work with anyone who has a diagnosed mental illness at least not on the diagnosis. However feel free to contact me, I can recommend some excellent therapists.
As the acclaimed John Overdurf taught me in his Linguistic Alchemy workshop “I am in the training business, I’m training the clients to pay attention”. People pay attention to the wrong things. Performance= talent + motivation – distraction. It’s surprisingly simple. Basically; what you focus on is what you get. Two of the biggest parts of my job is listening to you and asking questions -not good questions but great ones. Because that’s what elicits from you the great answers. If your answers have been unsatisfactory it’s only because of the questions you’ve asked. Yet everything you do is for a positive reason and if I don’t make sure your needs are met the changes we make will be fleeting. So we get into it a bit. Shall we?
Are you living up to your best? You just need to have more of what you already are you should not be someone else. What is your mission? I do know that your mission is to do something truly wonderful with your life. Are you doing it? You will never exceed your own highest expectations of yourself. If you feel you’ve short changed yourself let’s talk.
